They tested God’s godness and exasperated Him with their ungratefulness.
Numbers 11:1 Now the people complained about their hardships in the hearing of the LORD, and when he heard them his anger was aroused. Then fire from the LORD burned among them and consumed some of the outskirts of the camp. 2 When the people cried out to Moses, he prayed to the LORD and the fire died down. 3 So that place was called Taberah, because fire from the LORD had burned among them. 4 The rabble with them began to crave other food, and again the Israelites started wailing and said, “If only we had meat to eat! 5 We remember the fish we ate in Egypt at no cost–also the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions and garlic. 6 But now we have lost our appetite; we never see anything but this manna!”
Have you ever had a whinny child ?
A whinny student?
A whinny spouse?
A whinny employee?
If so, you know how stinky it is to have such a person under your authority or around you. These people can find something to complain about regardless of how good things are. They are professionals at making mole hills into mountains.
There was a generation like that in the Old Testament.
It was the generation of those who came out of Egypt. Though God delivered them and intended to lead them into a good land, they complained at every turn. Since that generation lived we have been told several times in the scripture to avoid being like that generation.
Ps. 95:7 b… Today, if you hear his voice,8 do not harden your hearts as you did at Meribah, as you did that day at Massah in the desert,9 where your fathers tested and tried me, though they had seen what I did.10 For forty years I was angry with that generation; I said, “They are a people whose hearts go astray, and they have not known my ways.” NIV
Ps. 106: 24 Then they despised the pleasant land; They did not believe in His word,25 But grumbled in their tents; They did not listen to the voice of the LORD.26 Therefore He swore to them, That He would cast them down in the wilderness,27 And that He would cast their seed among the nations, And scatter them in the lands.
No matter how difficult your journey, look for the goodness in it. No matter how challenging look for the hand of God . Choose a heart of gratitude, one that brings him pleasure.
