1. By definition purpose could be considered your destiny, your ambition, what you live for or what you would die for.
2. True fulfillment is found in doing what you’ve been created to do, and doing it with the gifts you’ve been given to use.
The apostle Paul came to understand this…
Philippians 3: 8 More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish in order that I may gain Christ, 9 and may be found in Him…12 Not that I have already obtained it, or have already become perfect, but I press on in order that I may lay hold of that for which also I was laid hold of by Christ Jesus. 13 Brethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
3. Each person has a God given purpose for living.
Acts 13:36 “For David, after he had served the purpose of God in his own generation, fell asleep, and was laid among his fathers, and underwent decay…
Jeremiah 1: 4 Now the word of the LORD came to me saying, 5 “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, And before you were born I consecrated you; I have appointed you a prophet to the nations.”
God already has certain things chosen for each of us to accomplish, things He foreknew, things He needs done, things for this generation.
Therefore, purpose – destiny is not something to decide on, but something to seek out and discover.
Where can you find the purpose for living?
Ephesians 2: 10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
4. Your highest purpose is found in serving as a member of the body of Christ.
- Pleasure is not your highest purpose.
- Knowledge is not your highest purpose.
- Marriage is not your highest purpose.
- Childbearing is not your highest purpose.
All of these can be a means through which God works, but the aim and goal of all ambition is gathering, building and being the “body of Christ”.
Being the Church and building the Church is the highest purpose of mankind. The Church is the “body of Christ”…those called out by God to represent the ministry of Jesus in the earth.
Isaiah saw this day:
Isaiah 61:6 But you will be called the priests of the LORD; You will be spoken of as ministers of our God. You will eat the wealth of nations, And in their riches you will boast.
Paul told the Corinthians:
2 Corinthians 5: 18 Now all these things are from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ, and gave us the ministry of reconciliation…
Jesus told His followers:
Matthew 11:29 “Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and YOU SHALL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS. 30 “For My yoke is easy, and My load is light.”
Luke 9:23 And He was saying to them all, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me. 24 “For whoever wishes to save his life shall lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake, he is the one who will save it. 25 “For what is a man profited if he gains the whole world, and loses or forfeits himself?
Matthew 6: 33 “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added to you.
We are called the Body of Christ!
