Today I want to talk to you about gatekeepers.
According to the Smith Bible dictionary, the gates and gateways of ancient cities held an important role for each city (Pg. 207.) They were sometimes taken as representing the very city itself and all that was encompassed in a city or region. This could have been where the term “principalities”, as seen in Ephesians 6, first dominated in culture. (The word “principalities” means “first one” or the one in “first place”.)
Ephesians 6:12 – For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. KJV
The gate was the central point of rule in the ancient day, and in the ancient day Satan was the “prince and the power of the air,” the “ruler of darkness” who held the “world systems” in his control.
It was at the gate of a city and each geographic capitol that Satan would have ruled or held sway over the influencers. We might say that whoever controlled the gates controlled the whole city or region – not to mention the people of that city or region.
Daniel 10:13 – “But the prince of the kingdom of Persia was withstanding me for twenty-one days; then behold, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, for I had been left there with the kings of Persia.”
Throughout history, in gentile cities, it was common for the leaders at the gate to be covetous, biased, prejudiced, perverse and, thus, demonized. Therefore, their influence skewed all that happened at the gates.
Here is a brief overview of the activities happening at the gates of the ancient city:
- The administration of justice and governmental rule.
- The public market, distribution and bartering.
- Discussion, debate and the exchange of ideas.
- Heathen sacrifice and worship.
- Slave trade and hiring.
- Prostitution, marriage and divorce.
- Protection and defense.
- Entertainment and amusement.
Later in history we see this as being synonymous with the “town square” or the “public square”.
In this day, though, we don’t have one formal gate where all leadership is represented. Having said that, we do have gate keepers in every city, county, state and nation.
Gatekeepers are humans leaders, corporations and entities who are led either by the Holy Spirit or by the influence from the “gates of Hell”. Some of these gate keepers may be found in the County-City buildings and others in state capitols, as many gate keepers of society are dispersed throughout a region.
Why do we say gatekeepers are dispersed throughout a region? Because governmental rule is only one sphere of influence in any society. Again look at the list of the activities that transpired at the ancient gate. For each item there are “gatekeepers” or chief influencers. Therefore, we can’t affect change in government only and expect all of society or culture to change.
Jesus said that the Gates of Hell will not prevail against the church. You are a key to the fulfillment of what Jesus said. How? Because you are destined to use your authority in Jesus to displace unrighteous principalities, powers and world rulers.
Simply agree with Jesus this week when you pray and say, “The righteous increase and find favor. Righteous leaders and influencers at the gates of my city are promoted and blessed. The unrighteous are removed from office and humbled before the Lordship of Jesus.” Let prayer and prophetic proclamation fill your mouth this week!
