Fortresses of protection and
defense are built up in the soul and behavior as a result of
rejection. Outside of Christ we build passive and aggressive fortresses of behavior to protect ourselves and manage
the hurts of life. Using this
illustration Jesus and Paul called these “strongholds”.
Matthew 12: 29 “Or how can anyone enter the strong
man’s house and carry off his property, unless he first binds the strong man?
And then he will plunder his house.”
II Corinthians 10: 3 For
though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh, for the weapons of our warfare are not of the
flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses. We are
destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge
of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ…
Behavioral patterns develop as a
result of rejection, these “stronghold” patterns are also called
roots. A root is the result of a seed
growing in the soul. The root (mature
seed) determines the fruit. If the seed
of rejection has been planted in the heart, the bad (bitter tasting, poisonous)
fruit will eventually come out in rejection behavior. The Bible talks about a “root of
bitterness” springing up and defiling many.
Hebrews 12: 15 See to
it that no one comes short of the grace of God; that no root of bitterness
springing up causes trouble, and by it many be defiled…
Seeds of poison are poured into
the soul when there is abuse, sorrow, injustice and injury. If these seeds are not removed through
resolution, understanding and reconciliation, then they start poisoning the
whole well of our heart. Bitterness is a
result of unresolved hurt, injury, abuse, isolation, loneliness, abandonment
and relational disappointment with God and people. When it springs up it is a offensive
weapon. It might “spring up”
as anger, violence, control or behavior along these lines.
These spiritual and emotional
seeds get bitter, unclean and foul when they are allowed to season and
rot. Instead of “getting healed through time” they only get worse and more poisonous
growing on the inside, in the soul of man.
As you can see it is very important
that we strive for a spirit led life of balance.
